The Regions have defined the school calendars even if the individual institutes, in their autonomy, can decide to adapt "the school calendar to the specific environmental needs on the proposal of the teachers' board" without prejudice to the limit of 200 days of lessons in order to ensure the validity of the school year.
While the school year formally starts on September 1, the bell will ring for the first time in Piedmont, Trentino and Valle d'Aosta on September 11, 2023, officially starting lessons. Students in Lombardy will follow the next day, September 12. On September 13, students return to school in several regions: Abruzzo, Basilicata, Campania, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Marche, Sicily, Umbria and Veneto.
For young people in Calabria, Liguria, Molise, Puglia and Sardinia, the return is set for September 14. Emilia Romagna, Tuscany and Lazio conclude the start of the school year on September 15. The Christmas holidays will generally be from December 23 to January 6, 2024 inclusive in all regions; the Easter holidays from March 28 to April 2, 2024. To hear the sound of the last bell in most regions, we will have to wait until June 8, 2024.
But in Emilia Romagna, Marche and Valle d'Aosta, lessons will end on June 6; in Puglia and Tuscany on June 7; the last one is Trentino Alto Adige, where school will end on June 11.
