Naples, from 4th to September inclusive campus for 70 kids with disabilities

Naples symbol of welcome and inclusion: from September 4 to 9, the Campania capital welcomes a group of 70 boys and girls aged 12 to 17 with cognitive fragilities and intellectual disabilities, coming from different Italian regions, to live the experience of the sports and recreational campus Inclusi Summer Camp. The goal? To undertake and share activities aimed at social inclusion and the valorization of diversity.

The initiative – organized by the Proodos Cooperative and the local partners Società Sportiva Dilettantistica Sant'Anastasia and ORA Aps – was born within the framework of “Inclusi. Dalla scuola alla vita, andata e ritorno”, a three-year project selected by “Con i Bambini” within the framework of the Fund for the fight against child educational poverty, which involves 52 Third Sector organizations (led by the Consorzio Consolida of Trento) as well as schools and institutions, from 5 regions (Campania, Lazio, Marche, Lombardy, Trentino-Alto Adige) committed to promoting a school and a territory that are fair and accessible to all.

“The Inclusi project was created to promote access to quality education for all and the real inclusion of children and young people with disabilities in the community and in school,” says Francesca Gennai, president of the Consolida consortium. “It does so through educational and teaching tools that take into account all aspects of the life of a boy and a girl in their community of reference: relationships, well-being, sports, culture, future work.”

Campania and Naples are the protagonists in this phase of the Inclusi project, hosting the campus that offers complete hospitality for 5 days in a facility in Sant'Anastasia to 70 boys and girls, coming from Milan, Cremona, Rome and the nearby Torre del Greco and San Sebastiano al Vesuvio. The boys, who mainly have cognitive fragilities and intellectual disabilities, have the opportunity to participate in a program organized every day in music workshops, manipulative activities, large sharing games such as treasure hunts and guided tours of the area: all tools to experience sociality and show off one's skills, giving a real example of breaking down barriers and stereotypes.

In pursuing this great goal, much importance is given to sport, considered an effective educational and inclusive tool for its ability to increase cognitive and relational skills, to create sociality and aggregation, to promote active participation and comparison, to teach respect. In general, outdoor recreational-educational activities (outdoor education, or education in contexts other than institutional ones) allow the acquisition of transversal skills (life skills) that have a positive impact on health, cognitive, physical, social and emotional development, particularly relevant in situations of fragility.

A point of attention also for the cultural afternoons in the city and its surroundings, managed by the social cooperative Parteneapolis that offers accessible and inclusive visits to the Museum Complex of Sant'Anna dei Lombardi, an important testimony of the Florentine Renaissance in Naples. The kids then have a guided tour of the historic center and the ancient public aquarium planned, to learn about the ecosystems and biodiversity of the Gulf of Naples and the Mediterranean. And again in Ercolano they will be able to take a journey through time, to the moment before the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, inside the Virtual Archaeological Museum.

The experience offered to the boys and girls at the Naples campus, which precedes the back to school, aims at acquiring skills that are useful for returning to school: the ability to interact and express one's ideas and needs, to listen to and respect others, but also to approach knowledge in a multidisciplinary way (through creative workshops and cultural visits), thus acquiring greater self-confidence to face future objectives.
