"We are finalizing the provisions of the decree that establishes a plan to reduce the wild boar population across the country. In Basilicata, I've seen great cooperation, and we're studying the best ways to implement this plan."
This was stated by the Ministry of Health's Special Commissioner for the swine fever emergency, Vincenzo Caputo, in Matera, on the sidelines of a meeting with mayors and park authorities, veterinarians, representatives of the Territorial Hunting Areas, the Provincial Police, and the local health authority.

The action to be implemented aims to contain any epidemiological developments which see some municipalities in the province of Potenza fall into the area infected by African Swine Fever following outbreaks confirmed in Campania, although there are currently no cases of an epidemic in Basilicata. The viral infection, not transmissible to humans, affects wild boars, putting pig farms at risk.
Transmission of the infection from one area to another can also occur through food products of pork origin, particularly those sold outside of legal channels and without proper traceability. "The Territorial Operations Group designated by the Basilicata Region," Caputo specified, "will be the implementing body for this action, in consultation with the mayors, to provide them with the necessary support to quickly resolve the problem. Currently, the monitored municipalities within the red zone are Moliterno, Paterno, Tramutola, Lagonegro, and Grumento. If the mayors also deploy their own resources, the goal of securing the territories from a health perspective can be more easily achieved."
