A Salerno The police arrested 8 people, of Georgian nationality, most of them illegal immigrants, accused of being part of a gang specialized in burglaries, seizing jewelry, valuable watches and money worth over 100.000 euros.

The five people, three men and two women, all Georgians, most of them illegal in the national territory, were about to leave Italy and were the recipients of the arrest warrant on suspicion of a crime.

The Salerno prosecutor's office is contesting, to varying degrees, the crimes of criminal association aimed at committing crimes against property, various thefts in homes or at electronics or luxury goods retailers, and receiving stolen goods.

The investigations entrusted to the Flying Squad of the provincial capital of Campania were started in December of last year when, in the city, an increase in home burglaries was recorded.

This phenomenon, according to investigators, was considered to be linked to the presence in the territory of foreigners, burdened by criminal records or police records regarding property crimes.

The emergency measure issued by the prosecutor's office will be examined by the investigating judge. Observation and shadowing of the suspects and analysis of the images recorded by video surveillance systems have led to the identification of those responsible for several thefts in homes and shopping centers, committed between December 2022 and last July. The method of receiving stolen goods has also been reconstructed, through female accomplices who used some pawn shops or gold buyers.

Access to the victims' condominiums was guaranteed by one of the gang members who entered by pretending to be a tenant or a guest. The gang's loot amounts to approximately 100 thousand euros, according to investigators' estimates; part of the stolen goods, including necklaces, bracelets, gold chains, were recovered during the investigations.

“Satisfaction and appreciation for the operation conducted today in Salerno by the State Police, as part of an investigation coordinated by the city prosecutor's office, which led to the capture of members of a gang specializing in apartment burglaries.”

This was stated by the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, commenting, the Ministry of the Interior informs, "the arrest of 8 individuals of Georgian nationality, most of them irregular on the national territory, and the seizure of jewels, valuable watches and money for a value of over 100.000 euros".

“An important result, the fruit of complex investigative work and a widespread territorial control activity carried out by the police forces to combat hateful criminal phenomena that generate social alarm among the population. The testimony of an incessant commitment to guarantee the safety of local communities”, underlined the head of the Viminale.
