Shock throughout Italy over the tragedy involving five workers on the Turin-Milan railway line. The unfortunate accident occurred last night when a train hit and killed five laborers who were carrying out maintenance work. Two other workers who were grazed by the train were saved and miraculously remained unharmed. Shock in the municipality of Sparanise in the province of Caserta, the country where one of the five unfortunate victims was originally from.
“There are many young people who leave the Agro Caleno to look for work outside our province, a journey that in the case of our fellow citizen will have no return” commented the director of Cisal Caserta Marianna Grande. “We join in the pain of the family and at the same time we question ourselves on the social, economic and above all security reasons that have caused this unacceptable event”.
Below is the statement from the Secretary General, Francesco Cavallaro: "What happened last night in Brandizzo, in the Turin area, is a tragedy that leaves us shocked. In this moment of terrible pain we join the families of the people whose lives were shattered while doing their job. A tragedy, yet another, that highlights the need to do more in terms of safety in the workplace.
It is urgent to arrive at an organic reform of the matter with the introduction, for all sectors, of a system of qualification of companies based on a points license. A sort of 'quality passport', which rewards virtuous companies that invest in prevention and safety and penalizes those not in compliance especially with regard to the delicate world of works awarded in contract".
