During the night, a tragic train accident occurred on the Turin-Milan line, near the Brandizzo station, in which five workers were hit and killed.
The workers were busy with track maintenance and were hit by a locomotive that was moving the wagons. Fortunately, two other workers who were working nearby managed to avoid the train and get to safety without suffering any injuries.
According to initial investigations, the train was traveling at a speed of 160 km per hour. The workers were employees of an external company and were hit by a train that was not in commercial service, as stated by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana.
The competent authorities and Rete Ferroviaria Italiana are currently investigating the dynamics of the accident. Furthermore, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana expresses deep sorrow for the incident and joins in the condolences of the victims' families. The Carabinieri and Polfer intervened at the scene of the accident.
During the night, the 5 victims were identified, aged between 22 and 52, all employees of a company in Borgo Vercelli. In addition, technicians from Spresal and Asl, as well as firefighters, are present at the site of the accident.
At the moment, train traffic is suspended. The train involved in the accident was heading towards Turin.
