Former US President Donald Trump has turned himself in to the Fulton County Jail, near Atlanta, Georgia.

As reported by La Voce di New York, he had announced that he would show up at the prison at 19:30 pm and so it was.

The images captured by helicopters of a long line of black Suburbans with flashing lights, a dozen or so, plus two dozen more on motorcycles, traveling the 15 miles from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to the county jail, have entered the homes of millions of Americans, showing a city where the only people on the streets were police officers and reporters and a handful of supporters of the former president on one side of the street while on the other side there were people who wanted to see him in prison.

In front of the prison there was a crowd of journalists and television teams camped for days. There were no feared demonstrations. A little less than 45 minutes passed between the former president's entry into the prison and his exit. His mug shot was taken, which had never happened before with a former American president.

Trump, who was accompanied by his lawyer, was read the charges for his attempts to overturn his 2020 election defeat in Georgia.

Trump was indicted on August 14 on charges of 13 crimes, including violating the state’s anti-racketeering law by forming a criminal enterprise, soliciting a public official to violate his or her oath of office, conspiracy to impersonate a public official, conspiracy to commit first-degree forgery, and conspiracy to submit false documents.

Trump had changed his legal team. Drew Findling, a well-known Atlanta lawyer, was replaced by Steven Sadow.

“He should never have been indicted. He is innocent of all charges brought against him,” says Sadow, who was immediately called back to work even before the former president arrived because one of the 19 defendants, the lawyer Kenneth Chesebro, accused of orchestrating the plan to send fake electors to Congress, asked the magistrate for a summary trial.

The request was also supported by District Attorney Fani Willis, who asked the magistrate to schedule the start of the legal proceedings for October 23, in two months.

Steve Sadow, dissented and indicated that he would file a motion to separate his, Trump’s, case from Chesebro’s, which would free him from the summary proceeding.

The matter now falls to Judge Scott McAfee, who has handled the bail and bond process for the 19 defendants. A trial just two months from now seems unlikely, given the number of defendants, pretrial motions and complex legal issues that could be argued before a jury can be seated.

Trump's decision to change lawyers came after Drew Findling negotiated a $200 bail for Trump. Earlier in the afternoon, his former chief of staff, Mark Meadows, turned himself in and was released after posting $100 bail.
