Police arrested a 26-year-old man with no criminal record for the murder of 55-year-old Paolo Menditto, found dead in his home on Via Filippo Saporito in Aversa yesterday morning, with 19 stab wounds to the upper body.

Officers from the Caserta Flying Squad and the Aversa Police Station arrested him for aggravated homicide, following orders from the Naples North Prosecutor's Office, which deemed there to be a real risk of his escape, given that the man was located at the Aversa train station.

From the immediate investigations that began after the discovery of the body, it emerged that the 26-year-old had killed Paolo Menditto out of jealousy, suspecting that there was a relationship between his partner and the 55-year-old.

The woman had frequent contact with Menditto, from whom she purchased drugs. There had been previous arguments between the 26-year-old and Menditto over the woman, and so the investigative lead gained weight, until investigators confirmed, through cross-examination, that the 26-year-old had gone to Menditto, likely to resolve the situation once and for all.

It's likely that the two argued, and this could be confirmed by the medical examiner's investigation. However, the alleged murderer violently attacked Menditto, repeatedly stabbing him with a long-bladed knife, which has not yet been recovered. The attacks targeted the chest, abdomen, hips, and shoulders, penetrating deeply and leaving the 55-year-old with little chance of survival.
