Of 140 seawater samples taken from the beginning of September until today in Campania, the first analytical results relating to microbiological parameters have allowed the restoration of bathing conditions in the stretches of sea where bathing is prohibited in the municipalities of Battipaglia (Lido Spineta) and Pontecagnano (Sud Picentino) in the province of Salerno.

These sections were found to be non-compliant on August 9, with unfavorable results also confirmed by additional sampling in the following days, then they instead recorded values compliant with the regulations on September 6, determining the revocation of the bans. Values exceeding the regulatory limits were found in the samples taken on September 7 in the Municipality of Sorrento in the sea waters called Sorrento and Marina Grande – east side respectively, the latter having already been found to be non-compliant on July 14 until the favorable result of the sea sample taken on July 19.

Given the lack of rain, the causes of these exceedances are most likely to be found in problems with the functioning of the sewer system, which have compromised the healthiness of the water in question.
