“The third theft in two years of the statuette of Jesus placed on the bench in memory of my son Ciro is a true provocation to the soul and memory of my son, to us family members, condemned to immense pain, and to the Italian state”.
The words of Nunzia Covelli, mother of Ciro Modugno, who died in a road accident in Corso Umberto I, in Casal di Principe, on October 10, 2021, at 23:00 pm, are strong.
The young man was riding his scooter along the street late at night when he was hit by a car that was speeding. The driver of the car was a 28-year-old under the influence of alcohol and drugs, for whom the PM had initially requested 12 years of imprisonment. It was the ruling of April 8, 2022 that sentenced the driver to seven years and four months of imprisonment, two of which were spent under house arrest, pending the verdict of the Court of Cassation next November.
Present for Ciro Modugno's family over the years are the following associations: the Unitary Association of Family Members and Victims of the Road (ODV), chaired by Alberto Pallotti with Biagio Ciaramella as vice-president; the Association of Courageous Mothers and Victims of the Road (ODV), chaired by Elena Ronzullo; and the Italian Association of Family Members and Victims of the Road (ODV), chaired by Alberto Pallotti.

There were many forms of closeness to the family: from the football memorial held at the “Scalzone” stadium in Casal di Principe, to a party at the Teatro della Legalità, passing through the placing of a bench in memory of the young man in Corso Umberto I, on April 4, 2022. On the occasion, the municipal administration donated two statuettes: one depicting Jesus, the other an Angel.
The statuette of Jesus was stolen for the third time in two years, sparking the anger of mother Nunzia: “I was disappointed by yet another theft that shows the lack of respect for the life sentence of pain that we live every day - says the woman -. Since I lost Ciro, as a family we have tried to do something to ensure that similar events never happen again on our streets.
Yet, there are people who do not understand all this and that is why we have filed a complaint for the third time. I hope that the work of the Carabinieri will take its course, as happened the first two times. Leave us our dignity - concludes - to face our pain”.
