As part of the “Safe Tourism” plan, coordinated for Italy by the Ministry of the Interior, the Guardia di Finanza took part with its own personnel in joint patrol services with the Guardia Civil, carried out at the international airports of Madrid “Barajas” and Valencia “Manines” where, during the summer season, millions of passengers pass through.
Since last July 15th and until mid-September, financial police officers from the airport groups of Fiumicino, Linate, Bologna and Tessera have been employed, alongside their Spanish colleagues, in control, prevention and monitoring activities, aimed at strengthening the security of the airports in a particularly sensitive period due to the presence of numerous Italian tourists on holiday in the country, facilitating their relations with the local police authorities.
Technical support to the Guardia Civil took the form of document checks, passenger screening and baggage inspections, including the use of equipment for detecting drugs and explosives. The initiative, already tested in previous editions, is also receiving particular appreciation from local authorities this year, to the benefit of real and perceived security by fellow citizens.
Collaboration with foreign police forces is nowadays an essential element in combating the most insidious forms of crime. To this end, the Guardia di Finanza has long developed a strong international projection, also through the network of officers serving abroad at the main diplomatic offices and the most important international organizations.
