The defender of national di Panama Gilberto Hernandez was killed at Colon, on the Caribbean coast of the Central American country. The 26-year-old was walking down the street with friends when gunmen opened fire from a taxi. Six other people were injured. The attack took place on Sunday and police said they had arrested a suspect.

Hernandez had made two appearances in March for the Panamanian team (one againstArgentina di Messi) and was a key figure in the local Club Atletico Independiente with which he won two championships. He is the second professional footballer killed in Panama in the last six years.

The Panamanian Football Federation (Fepafut) expressed its condolences “to the family, loved ones and the entire Panamanian Football family.” In Colon, a city of 80 inhabitants on the island of Manzanillo in the Caribbean Sea, at the entrance to the Panama Canal, a war between gangs is underway and drug traffickers frequently settle scores.
