Don Maurizio Granara, 82, a priest of the Piccola Casetta di Nazareth in Casapesenna, and for years leader of the Sacra Famiglia di Lago Patria parish in Giugliano, died yesterday following a serious road accident in Grazzanise on provincial road 147, which passes behind the military airport.

The car carrying the priest, who was on his way to celebrate mass, collided head-on with another car, and a third car was also involved; the violent collision may have been caused by a brush fire adjacent to the accident site.

The Fire Department of the Provincial Command of Caserta intervened with two teams (coming from the Mondragone detachments), one worked to extract the injured from the passenger compartments of the cars, reduced to twisted metal, the second team took care of putting out the nearby brush fire, a circumstance that created problems for rescue operations. Among the injured was also the priest, who died.
