A common thread has constantly run through the life of Matteo Messina Denaro, the mafia boss who died last night at the age of 62 from colon cancer, and it was represented by women.
Numerous female figures have played a significant role in the life of the Cosa Nostra boss. Let's start with his sisters, Patrizia and Rosalia. Patrizia, born in Castelvetrano on September 18, 1970, was definitively sentenced in 2018 to 14 and a half years in prison for mafia association.
Rosalia, 69, was jailed last March on charges of helping her brother evade capture for years by managing the family's cash register and the transmission of "pizzini" (notes). But beyond that, Matteo Messina Denaro, nicknamed "u siccu," was known for his penchant for women, which led him to have relationships with several female companions over the years.
The historical lover Maria Mesi
His historical lover was Maria Mesi, with whom the boss had meetings in an apartment in Bagheria, a few kilometers from Palermo.

Austrian girlfriend Andrea Haslehner
Another woman in Messina Denaro's life was an Austrian girlfriend, Andrea Haslehner, with whom he had an affair during the period of the massacres. It was with her that the boss spent a holiday in Forte dei Marmi in 92, while Palermo's streets were being bloodied by bombings. The relationship ended two years later.
After his arrest on January 16, contacts and messages with several female figures were found on the boss's cell phone. Among them, a woman in her 60s, a resident of Campobello di Mazara, was questioned by magistrates to determine her possible involvement in aiding and abetting, but she denied having ever had any contact with him.
Then there was another woman, also in her sixties, who admitted to the police that she had had a relationship with the boss, but that she had not known his real identity.
Finally, there's another woman who played an important role in Matteo Messina Denaro's life: his daughter Lorenza. The young woman, recognized by the boss a few days before his death, had never had the opportunity to meet her father during his thirty-year fugitive status.
