Luchino Visconti's memorial stone stolen in Forio d'Ischia The memorial stone dedicated to Luchino Visconti, the famous Italian director whose body has rested on the island for twenty years, has been stolen in Forio d'Ischia.

The municipality of Forio filed a complaint with law enforcement for this vile act. City Councilor Davide Laezza commented on the incident, saying: "Today, La Colombaia, Visconti's summer residence, was defaced and his memory was insulted.

This site has been violated and the history of this villa and the figure of Luchino Visconti have been vilified.

This is a further insult to what this villa has endured over the years. In 2016, a commemorative plaque was damaged and removed, and now the tombstone where Visconti and his sister Uberta are buried has also been damaged.

Laezza continued that this theft is pointless and told of a recent homage to Visconti, which took place after the cleaning and restoration of the path leading to the tomb. Together with Mayor Stani Verde, they paid homage to the Maestro in silence and away from the spotlight.

"It was a moment of emotion and pride. And now, those who are trying to revive this site, which belongs to all of us, have been dealt a low blow. We are filing a complaint against unknown persons and are sending a letter to the Superintendency, the Region, and the Government," Laezza concluded. Luchino Visconti, a Milanese from a historic family (among his ancestors is Francesco Bernardino Visconti, a character who apparently inspired the Unnamed in Alessandro Manzoni's "The Betrothed"), is considered the father of Italian Neorealism.

He directed films such as "Ossessione," "Bellissima," "Rocco ei suoi fratelli," and "Il Gattopardo." He died on March 17, 1976, in Rome, shortly before his seventieth birthday. Since 2003, his ashes have rested on the island of Ischia, in his summer residence, "La Colombaia," along with those of his sister Uberta. This is where the now-stolen tombstone once stood.
