“With reference to what was reported by some press organs regarding the landslide that affected the Varano hill in Castellammare, which occurred during the night between 6 and 7 September,” Eav, in a note, “denies any correlation due to the ongoing work to double the railway line.
This is confirmed by the site operations manager who highlights that the collapse occurred in an area far from the entrances (north and south) of the new tunnel and furthermore that, to date, the consolidation works have been completed on both sides".
“The superintendency, through the consultant – is written in the Eav note – also reiterates that, following an inspection with the technicians in charge of the Archaeological Park and the Municipality of Castellammare, it emerged that these are phenomena of collapse and sliding from the ridge already affected by the same types of disruption that occurred and were made safe by the Archaeological Park in January 2021 with extremely urgent interventions through the construction of metal containment bulkheads located downstream.
It is possible to trace these recurring phenomena back to the overall geomorphological structure as well as to the presence of large trees at the edge of the slope, inclined/suspended towards the valley. The works in progress for the construction of the Castellammare tunnel do not therefore present any type of interference with what happened. Currently, the relevant authorities are engaged in further emergency safety works”, concludes the note.
So far the Eav note published without cuts. But more than one doubt arises in all the citizens who live in that area: have thorough checks been done or is it enough that someone who could be responsible for the collapse says that everything is fine?
