The invasion of Italian seas by the blue crab (Callinectes sapidus), a voracious predator of mollusks, is causing serious damage to the production of bivalve mollusks nationwide, and obviously also endangers activities along the entire Caserta coast. To control the phenomenon, the Local Health Authority of Caserta directed by Amedeo Blasotti, through the Prevention Department, has decided to establish a specific Monitoring and Study Unit of the "Blue Crab" for the Caserta coast.
The aim is to involve operators in the fishing sector and their trade associations, and therefore monitor local production, the presence of blue crabs on the Caserta coast, as well as carry out scientific research aimed, among other things, at devising new methods of breeding and managing the natural resource of molluscs capable of counteracting the predation of the blue crab.
The monitoring unit will operate in collaboration with the Campania Region and with the involvement of the Department of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Biological Sciences of the University of Naples, the Anton Dhorn Station (SZN), the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), the National Research Council (CNR) and the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute.
