Pilot project for the use of the garden area of the Casa del Rilievo di Telefo.
Otium, quiet, industrious inactivity are the basic concepts of the new project launched by the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum: the opening, starting from Sunday 3 September, of one of the gardens of the House of the Relief of Telephus, the so-called “pomegranate garden”, making the offer of the free Sunday of the month of September even more precious.
The aim is to offer the possibility of a stop in a place pleasantly shaded by pomegranate trees and the two last large pines still present on the site, which allows you to experience a "slow" visit mode, privileging the quality of time and giving greater value to the experience through the adoption of slower rhythms. On this occasion, an ancient and narrow street is opened, the so-called "Southern Vicolo", on which one of the two known bakeries of ancient Herculaneum opens, equipped with a toilet (latrine) that initially belonged to the nearby Palestra and then passed into the availability of those who managed this bakery.
“The intervention in the garden of the House of the Relief of Telephus – declares Director Sirano – aims to offer the public not only a pleasant, adequately equipped rest area, but a place that stimulates reflection, listening and the study of themes characterizing Roman society, otium first and foremost and, above all, for the current time that sees us as protagonists, the rediscovery of free time understood not as an empty space but as a space of the soul, populated by intellectual, meditative and recreational activities that for the ancient Romans represented a fundamental element of lifestyle and moral character and that in Herculaneum find full expression in the exceptional testimonies of the Villa of the Papyri”.
The new layout will give visitors the opportunity to stop in the area comfortably seated on folding deckchairs of a bold burgundy red color that ideally recalls that of ripe pomegranates. Adults and children will be able to take a break, during which they can read and consult volumes in different languages selected for the purpose.
The multifunctional space will be animated with various installations and initiatives over the next few weeks. Access to the Garden of the House of the Relief of Telephus is included in the entrance ticket and during the same visiting hours as the archaeological site.
