"We await with hope and confidence updates on the condition of the second child and his parents," the statement continues. "The formation had just taken off to head for Vercelli, where it was scheduled to perform an air show, when, for reasons yet to be determined, the Pony 4 aircraft piloted by Major Oscar Del Do' lost altitude and crashed to the ground. The pilot, immediately before impact, managed to eject."

"It is not possible to confirm the cause of the accident at this time," the Air Force wrote, adding: "One of the hypotheses under consideration, given the dynamics of the event, is that the aircraft struck a bird (technically known as a bird strike) during the very early stages of takeoff. The fire that broke out following the aircraft's impact with the ground unfortunately engulfed a car traveling on the airport perimeter with four people on board, causing the death of a child and injuries to the other three occupants of the vehicle."
