Apple unveiled its new smartphone models, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, during its September 12 event. These are Apple's base models for 2023.
One of the new features introduced is the inclusion of the Dynamic Island feature also in the base models, which was previously reserved only for the Pro variants. Both models have a Super Retina XDR display with a brightness of up to 2.000 nits, double that of the iPhone 14. The diagonals of the displays are 6,1 and 6,7 inches respectively. The available colors are Pink, Yellow, Green, Blue and Black, in addition there are reduced borders and a renewed design.
Apple has also taken time to focus on environmental sustainability, with components made from sustainable materials. For example, the logic board is made from 100% recycled copper. Moving on to the cameras, both models have a dual rear camera with a 48MP main sensor and a telephoto option. There are significant improvements in portrait quality and a TrueDepth camera with autofocus on the front.
The iPhone 15 models are powered by the A16 Bionic chip, the same one used in the iPhone 14 Pro. As for battery life, it’s only been mentioned that the iPhone 15 has a larger battery than the iPhone 14. The models also feature the second-generation ultra-wideband chip and improved audio.
Apple also announced the introduction of Emergency SOS and Find My satellite services in Italy. There is also a new satellite service called Roadside Assistance. At the moment it seems that this service is only available in the United States, at least initially. Access to these satellite features is free for two years with iPhone 15.
Finally, the long-awaited news is the introduction of the USB-C port, marking the end of the Lightning standard. With the new cable, you can charge not only iPhones, but also Macs, iPads and second-generation AirPods Pro. New eco-friendly MagSafe accessories are also available.
Pricing in the US starts at $799 for the 15GB iPhone 128 and $899 for the iPhone 15 Plus with the same storage capacity.
