On September 12, around 12 o'clock, citizens on the territory of the Campania will receive on their cell phones a message with a different sound than usual. This is the experimentation of the national public alarm system, called IT-alert and promoted by the National Department of Civil Protection.
The message is just a test. Citizens will only have to read the message and fill out a questionnaire that will be completely anonymous. The public warning system that has already been tested in Tuscany, Sardinia, Sicily, Calabria, Emilia Romagna, is now being tested in our region and, at the same time, in Friuli Venezia Giulia and Marche. Gradually, it will be the turn of the other Regions. Once fully operational, once the experimental phase has ended across the entire national territory, IT-alert will allow citizens to be informed in cases of serious emergencies.
These are the types of risk that may be included in the warnings once the tests are completed: tsunami generated by an earthquake; collapse of a large dam; volcanic activity (Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei, Vulcano, Stromboli); nuclear accidents or radiological emergency situations; major accidents in industrial plants (legislative decree 105/2015) and heavy rainfall. Earthquakes and bradyseism are not included in the messages. The test on day 12 will serve exclusively to publicize IT-alert as a new and additional public warning system that, in the event of serious emergencies of the types indicated above, could reach citizens in the affected areas.
In this testing phase, we do not go into detail about the risks and behaviors to be taken, nor are real messages sent, it is only an experiment. Sending the test message is necessary to allow citizens to identify the sound of the message and its visual formulation.
