As Neuralink prepares to begin testing implantable devices on humans, China is mounting a challenge for dominance in the artificial intelligence sector, which will become vital even at a tactical level in the coming years.
China has apparently assembled a team of top scientists inspired by the human brain to develop a "collective brain" that will augment computers used in cities, which currently collect and analyze terabytes of information through sensors, cameras, and other surveillance devices.
This brain will be more efficient than traditional AI systems, consume less energy, and, according to its developers, "will improve governance." Gao Wen, a leading AI researcher, in a study titled "City Brain: Challenges and Solutions," states that this system is based on "retina-inspired computing," and the goal of his and his team's work is to ensure China wins the race to develop the most advanced AI on the planet.
According to Newsweek, China is making significant progress towards general AI (here we explain what we mean by AGI), putting it in a position to compete with systems like ChatGPT or Bard.
By 2030, China aims to become a world leader in AI, a goal clear in the "China Brain Project" announced in 2016.
