Earth is out of control: six boundaries crossed, what to do?

An international group of scientists has published a study determining that humanity has crossed six of the nine "planetary boundaries" that indicate the overall health of our planet. These boundaries have been defined as limits within which human activities can operate without triggering irreversible changes in the environment.

The six borders crossed are:

  • Climate change: the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has exceeded the safe level of 350 parts per million (ppm).
  • Loss of biodiversity: The population of animal and plant species has declined by more than 60% since 1970.
  • Biogeochemical cycles: Excessive use of fertilizers has led to nutrient pollution in water and soil.
  • Ocean acidification: Ocean acidity has increased due to the absorption of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
  • Deforestation and other land-use changes: Global forest cover has decreased by about 30% since 1970.
  • Fresh water availability: Demand for fresh water has exceeded supply in many parts of the world.

The study found that these boundaries are interconnected, and that crossing one can negatively impact others. For example, climate change can lead to habitat loss and the spread of disease, while deforestation can contribute to air pollution and soil erosion.

The fact that humanity has crossed six of the nine planetary boundaries is a worrying sign. It indicates that our activities are having a significant impact on the environment and that urgent change is needed to avoid catastrophic consequences.

A hope for the future

The study finds that one of the boundaries, that of ozone, is improving thanks to global efforts initiated by the Montreal Protocol in 1987. This demonstrates that large-scale, coordinated change is possible and can have a positive impact on the environment.

Addressing the six breached boundaries will require radical changes in our energy, food, and production systems. We will need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect biodiversity, reduce chemical use, and improve resource efficiency.

These changes will be difficult to achieve, but they are necessary to ensure a sustainable future for our planet.
