The situation in Libya is becoming increasingly serious due to cyclone “Daniel”, which hit the north-east of the country after crossing Greece, Bulgaria and Türkiye.
According to the Minister of Health of the eastern Libyan government, Othman Abdul Jalil, there are over 3.000 deaths in Libya. In addition, the director of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Tamer Ramadan, reported that 10.000 people are missing, with the death toll continuing to rise.
The situation is particularly dramatic in the city of Derna, where the collapse of two dams has caused most of the deaths recorded so far. Torrential rains have damaged and destroyed entire residential areas, especially in Cyrenaica. The cities of Misurata, Al Bayda and Marj have been the most affected, with violent thunderstorms and winds reaching 180 kilometers per hour.
The Italian government expressed its closeness to the Libyan people and activated the Civil Protection to provide assistance during this emergency. The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, also sent a message of participation and condolences to the President of the Presidential Council of Libya, Mohamed Younis Al-Menfi. Antonio Tajani, Vice President of the Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, also guaranteed rapid assistance from Italy.
The Italian Red Cross has stressed the importance of coordinating to provide aid and said it is urgent to reverse the dangerous environmental situation into which the world is plunging.
