The latest seismic events have brought attention back to the Sferisterio of Fuorigrotta due to the risk of collapse. After the tremors of last week, in fact, some tuff bricks have come loose from the perimeter wall of the structure that overlooks via Giulio Cesare.

The site has been abandoned for years and the degradation is clearly evident. Inside there is only rubble, garbage and rats.

On 4 October 1999, the Superintendency for Cultural and Artistic Heritage of Naples placed the structure under protection, prohibiting any change in its intended use.

In 2002, the last project was presented for the recovery with a hypothesis of agreement with the Società attività concessioni sportive (Sacs). The project included a restructuring on three floors with a cinema, a games room and a shopping centre. However, a dispute arose with the Superintendency that did not allow the change of use other than that for which the Sferisterio was conceived, that is, for sports competitions.

Residents are very worried about the situation that could worsen at any moment also because the debris could hit the cars that pass through that road every day. Many have turned to the deputy of the Green-Left alliance Francesco Emilio Borrelli to raise the alarm.

“It is incredible how slow, cumbersome and complicated bureaucracy, combined with arrogance, blocks any type of intervention to recover and secure a structure that bears evident scars and signs of collapse.-comments Borrelli- “In addition to the danger to the safety of people and the surrounding buildings, we must consider that if a collapse were to occur it would be total chaos because it would block access to the Galleria Laziale that leads from Via Giulio Cesare to Mergellina. The Superintendency should intervene immediately and find a solution.”
