"Giorgio Napolitano's life reflects a large part of the history of the second half of the twentieth century, with its dramas, its complexity, its goals, its hopes."
President of the Republic Sergio Masttarella stated in a statement: "From his youthful involvement in the stimulating Neapolitan cultural scene, to his adherence to the anti-fascist cause and the communist movement, to his commitment to the development of Southern Italy and the lower social classes, up to his staunch commitment to Europe and the strengthening of democratic values, President Napolitano has led significant battles for social development, peace, and the progress of Italy and Europe," he continued.
Member of the European Parliament, and Chairman of its Committee on Constitutional Affairs, he promoted the strengthening of the Community institutions for an increasingly authoritative and united Europe.

"Elected to the highest offices of the state, President of the Chamber of Deputies, Senator for life, and President of the Republic for two terms, he interpreted his role as guarantor of the values of our community with fidelity to the Constitution and keen intelligence, with heartfelt attention to the demands for renewal present in society," the Head of State concluded.
Dedicated to the cause of workers, his tireless efforts to combat the spiral of workplace deaths were tireless. His death saddens me deeply, and while I express the Republic's deepest gratitude to his memory, I extend the entire nation's condolences to his family.
