On Friday evening, doctors at the San Salvatore Hospital in L'Aquila declared Matteo Messina Denaro's health condition irreversible, due to the colon cancer he contracted in 2020.

However, two days after that verdict, the mafia boss is still in a coma, although his fate is sealed.

According to doctors, the 62-year-old has an uncommon temperament, so his agony could continue, although not for long. Messina Denaro is sedated and in a coma, and is no longer receiving intravenous nourishment.

Doctors could further reduce the medication, always respecting his living will, in which he expressed his refusal of aggressive treatment.

Although we've entered the very final chapter in the story of the massacre boss, the emergency is much more stringent than in previous weeks. Complex and highly delicate procedures have been implemented to manage the post-mortem period.

Extraordinary security measures have been implemented both inside and outside the San Salvatore Hospital, where Messina Denaro has been hospitalized since August 8th after being transferred from the maximum security prison in L'Aquila.

In his cell in the inmate ward of L'Aquila hospital, which has been turned into a hospice because, for security reasons, it was impossible to transfer him to a dedicated facility for pain management and to accompany terminally ill patients towards their deaths, Messina Denaro is constantly monitored by several dozen people, both by health workers and law enforcement.
