A candid hour-and-a-half discussion on the problems of Caivano "and other similar places in Italy" was held by National Anti-Mafia Prosecutor Giovanni Melillo, who came to Parco Verde to express solidarity with the community on the outskirts of Naples, once again in the news due to the violence perpetrated against the two young cousins.
Answering questions from the parish priest, Don Maurizio Patriciello, and from the faithful who crowded the church of San Paolo, Melillo responded to the request for greater intervention by the State, inviting citizens not to ignore the situation and to defend democracy, founded on rights and duties.
"Democracies, as we know, can become ill and die. No one can turn a blind eye," the magistrate warned. "It's true that in this area the state failed to intervene adequately, but not in the sense that it wasn't there at all, but rather that it was only partially there.
I can say that the Naples District Attorney's Office has always considered Caivano a priority, but that is not enough.

This state deficit, present here as elsewhere, manifests itself as the ruling classes' flight from responsibility. This is the point the Caivano community must emphasize, not only to demand greater security, but also to demand emancipation. I hope that repressive measures will be supplemented by other measures, such as hiring new social workers or creating new sports fields for children. This is because when the state is lacking, it is also because the state's demand is lacking.
"Legislative measures are a solution to the general problems, but Caivano can't stop there. I will return in the coming months," the prosecutor pledged. "I believe your fight must continue on other frontiers, and Caivano must become the promoter of a civil pact that involves everyone here."
