Approximately one in eight men in Italy is likely to develop prostate cancer during his lifetime.

At the moment there are almost 50 thousand men living with the cancer to the prostate, with a mortality of approximately 7 thousand patients each year.

Vincenzo Mirone, full professor of Urology at the Federico II University of Naples and president of the Pro Ets Foundation, stated this while speaking at the XII Social Affairs Commission of the Chamber in the Communication 'European plan to fight cancer' of the commission to the European Parliament and the Council. It is essential, he warns, to strengthen prevention.

Prevention and familiarity are essential to fight this type of carcinoma but in Italy, Mirone said, "there are only two foundations for the prevention of prostate cancer and one is Pro Ets. We have a mobile unit and we went to about 500 squares, we visited tens of thousands of men for free. I discovered many prostate cancers in this way. According to statistics, in fact, more than 30% of tumors are discovered incidentally".

Another fundamental aspect to take into account is the breast, because prostate cancer and breast cancer cross genetically. “If you have a grandmother with breast cancer, the risk of having a grandchild with prostate cancer also increases.

So it would be enough to join forces for the prevention of prostate cancer with the prevention of breast cancer to be able to carry out real primary prevention", he explained.

In Europe, prostate cancer has emerged as the most common cancer among men and the third leading cause of cancer death among men, after lung and colorectal cancers. As part of the European Beating Cancer Plan, he added, “the Council of the EU has advised Member States to extend population screening for prostate cancer based on prostate-specific antigen analysis and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a follow-up, and to ensure that patients who test positive have access to timely diagnostic procedures and complementary therapies”.

The National Oncology Plan 2023-2027 indicates among the strategic lines to be activated the implementation of the EU Council Recommendations on the prevention of this neoplasm.
