“Two new victims in the workplace, a tragic escalation apparently unstoppable. It is essential to adopt more incisive and targeted interventions.”

The protest of the workers' unions is growing strong. "The umpteenth death of a worker tragically highlights the dramatic nature of the issues related to workplace safety in the environmental hygiene sector. Giuseppe Cristiano, a man and a worker, will not return home this evening because not enough has been done to prevent yet another tragedy".

Francesco Napolitano, general secretary of Filas, says this and then explains: "This trade union organization believes that a mobilization that supports the general revision of risk prevention procedures in Asia Napoli can no longer be postponed, to determine conditions that guarantee safety standards that are even higher than those ordinarily provided for by the regulations in force.

If compliance with the rules does not prevent the death of workers, it is necessary to go beyond the bureaucratic compliance with the laws. For these reasons the undersigned OS proclaims
the strike of all workers employed by Asia Napoli SpA which will be carried out in the last four hours of work of each working shift on 15 September 2023.

The proclamation is made in full compliance with art. 2 paragraph 7 of Law 146/90 which derogates from the notice periods provided for by the law which do not apply in the case of protest for serious events harmful to the safety and security of workers".

Giovanni Sgambati, General Secretary of Uil Naples and Campania, in response to the news of the death of two workers at Napoli and Arzano says: “It is not the first time that we have highlighted that the tools currently available are not sufficient to guarantee safety at work”.

“First of all, we need to recognize the concept of workplace homicide, and we believe it is necessary to establish a special prosecutor's office dedicated to safety in the workplace.”

“It is not enough to have inspectors; it is essential to spread a culture of health and safety in the workplace, and this can be achieved through collaboration between unions and employers' associations.

I would also like to add that the age for carrying out certain jobs must be reviewed; it is not possible to assign tasks on scaffolding to people over sixty years of age. Pension policies relating to certain categories of work need to be reviewed,” concluded Sgambati.

“Two deaths in just 24 hours, four in a week. There are no more adequate words: we are witnessing a real daily massacre. Naples and Campania continue to pay an extremely high price, and are among the areas of Italy with the highest rate of fatal accidents at work.

Enough: the time has come to put a concrete stop to this situation, adopting every possible and necessary tool, from prevention to training, up to guaranteeing the certainty of punishment for those responsible for these tragedies.”

These are the words of the General Secretary of the Cgil Naples and Campania, Nicola Ricci. “Just yesterday,” Ricci recalled, “Cgil, Cisl and Uil wrote a letter to the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, thanking him for the sensitivity shown regarding health and safety at work in recent times, and asked for extraordinary attention from all institutions in the fight to isolate companies and employers who do not comply with current regulations.”

“Declarations and good intentions,” concluded Ricci, “are no longer sufficient: now we need concrete and immediate actions, starting with respect for our Constitution.”
