Cosa Nostra boss Benedetto Capizzi, 79, died in Milan hospital while in prison, according to several newspapers today.

Capizzi, a historic exponent of the 'cupola' had to serve two life sentences and was detained under the 41 bis regime in the maximum security prison of Opera.

During his detention it emerged that the man was trying to control his district, Villagrazia-Santa Maria del Gesù, from prison. His condition had worsened last summer and he was transferred to San Paolo in Milan. An autopsy has been ordered.
