The Cagliari prosecutor's office is investigating a multiple-homicide car accident that left four young people dead and two others injured. Prosecutor Rossana Allieri is responsible for determining the dynamics of the accident, among the hypothesized causes is the high speed at which the car was traveling, which was driven by one of the victims.
At 5 a.m., residents of Viale Marconi in Cagliari were awakened by two strong tremors, the sound of metal scraping on asphalt, flashing lights and the sound of sirens. A Ford Fiesta with six young people on board overturned due to high speed after hitting a curb.
The scale is very heavy: four dead and two injured. The victims are Alessandro Francesco Sanna, 19 years old from Assemini, Najibe Lavinia Zaher, the same age as Selargius and daughter of the city councilor Omar Zaher, Simone Picci, 20 years old from Cagliari and Giorgia Banchero, 24 years old. The injured are Alessandro Sainas and Manuel Incostante, both 19 years old from Cagliari.
The six young people were returning home after an evening spent in one of the clubs along the Poetto seafront. Alessandro Francesco Sanna was driving with Najibe Lavinia Zaher at his side. The other four young people were sitting in the back seat.
The car should have taken the Asse Mediano exit, but due to excessive speed it continued straight for a few meters. The driver lost control of the car, ending up first on the sidewalk and then on a low wall that delimits the entrance to a garden.
The car overturned and the four young people in the back seat were thrown out of the vehicle: Simone Picci and Giorgia Banchero died instantly, along with the driver and the girl next to him. Alessandro Sainas and Manuel Incostante were transported to the hospital, but their lives are not in danger, according to the information provided.
A resident who was awakened by the crashes said: “I heard two bangs, I went outside and saw the bodies on the asphalt and a young man trying to help the injured.” Local police officers, firefighters and 118 ambulances arrived at Viale Marconi to investigate the accident.
The four young people who died in the accident were just starting to enter the world of work and were cultivating hopes and passions like all their peers. Alessandro Francesco Sanna, 19 years old from Assemini, had intended to open a small business in the air conditioning sector, but he also loved football.
Members of the Asd Frassinetti Elmas, a football team where he had played in previous years, remembered the young man by publishing a photo of him. Najibe Lavinia Zaher, 19 years old from Selargius and daughter of the city councilor Omar Zaher, had to decide how to continue her studies and which faculty to enroll in.
In her latest Tik Tok video, she appears singing along to songs by neomelodic artists and Arabic-language rappers. The news of the young woman's death shocked the entire town, which was celebrating a traditional wedding in Selargius.
Giorgia Banchero, 24, lived in the Sant'Elia neighborhood of Cagliari and was passionate about sweets. She was the daughter of a manager of the Cagliari soccer team 'Vecchio Borgo', whose Coppa Italia match was postponed due to the mourning that struck the manager.
Simone Picci, 20, was injured in a fatal accident along the Asse Mediano in Cagliari last January. He had sustained injuries that would heal in about a month, while the driver of the Smart, with whom he was traveling, lost his life. In 2016, Simone's father was killed during an argument on Via Pertusola in the Is Mirrionis neighborhood in Cagliari.
As often happens in these cases, the news of the tragic accident spread immediately on social media, where many left messages of condolence and despair on the profiles of the victims. “It's a sad day for the loss of four friends who flew to heaven,” wrote a person who knew them on Facebook. “I can't believe it, poor kids and poor families,” added a friend of Giorgia.
