Two scammers from Naples have been arrested for dealing counterfeit money in Sannio and Caserta. The arrest was carried out following an order from the investigating judge of the Court of Benevento at the request of the local Prosecutor's Office, headed by Aldo Policastro.
The investigation revealed that the two suspects, a 38-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man, defrauded 23 people between 2022 and 2023 using counterfeit 100-euro banknotes. The banknotes were produced using an Ink-Jet printer for the graphics and a toner for the serial numbers.
Both were placed under house arrest following a custody order issued by investigating judge Vincenzo Landolfi at the request of prosecutor Marilia Capitanio, responsible for the investigations conducted by the Carabinieri of the Amorosi Station.
The 23 victims of the scammers suffered damages between May 2022 and May 2023 in the municipalities of Cautano, Amorosi, Sant'Agata dei Goti, Cerreto Sannita, Marcone, Telese Terme, Dugenta, Solopaca and Ruviano. The complaints were presented to the Carabinieri of the relevant Stations.
The investigations were supported by the acquisition of footage from public and private video surveillance systems, by the seizure of counterfeit banknotes and by the subsequent verification carried out by the Anti-adulteration Unit of Napoli. A series of interrogations and photographic recognitions were also carried out to reconstruct the dynamics of the facts.
According to investigators, the two scammers allegedly introduced a large number of counterfeit 100 euro banknotes into the market, which were used to purchase food, beauty products, consumables and pharmaceutical products.
Their main victims were small businesses, which were defrauded by using a 100 euro note for payments between 8 and 20 euros, collecting the change. This scam was perpetrated in the areas of Valle Telesina (Telese Terme, Cusano Mutri, Amorosi, San Salvatore Telesino, Cerreta Sannita and Solopaca), Valle Isclero (Durazzano, Sant'Agata dei Goti, Dugenta and Limatola) and Alto Tammaro (Morcone).
