Increased checks will be carried out in the streets and squares of Naples frequented by citizens and tourists, thanks to the collaboration with other law enforcement agencies. A monthly report will also be prepared to be shared with the commission on Municipal Police and Legality, in order to make known the results obtained and the activities carried out.
These are the conclusions of today's meeting of the Municipal Police and Legality commission, chaired by Pasquale Esposito, with the participation of the Councilor for Legality Antonio De Iesu and the Commander of the Local Police Ciro Esposito.
The president of the commission Esposito stressed that the problem of illegal trade must be addressed especially in the central areas of the city. It is intolerable that merchants who regularly pay taxes to the Municipality must suffer the blackout of their windows by illegal traders, just as it is unacceptable that tourists who pass in front of the Maschio Angioino or in the Decumani are exposed to the sale of counterfeit products.
Even with regard to illegal parking attendants, a more rigorous approach will be adopted. It is necessary to respond to the needs of citizens and demonstrate the willingness of the institutions to intervene in the matter. Councilor De Iesu underlined the commitment of the Local Police on this front, respecting the resources available and in the context of the different institutional responsibilities of the Corps.
Priority targets will be identified, such as the streets of the historic centre, via Toledo and the Decumani, also in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies such as the Guardia di Finanza, which has already guaranteed its availability.
Commander Esposito stated that the phenomenon of illegal commercial activity is widespread, but the data from the Municipal Police indicate an increase in efforts regarding checks and seizures. However, it should be emphasized that many of the illegal traders have itinerant licenses and can be fined only if they operate in central areas, while they can be subjected to seizure only if they sell counterfeit goods.
Despite this, the control activity will be maintained and expanded. It is also necessary to focus on identifying the deposits of counterfeit goods to make it more difficult to immediately supply them to illegal stalls.
For Massimo Cilenti (Napoli Libera), the protests of the traders are legitimate and, as far as possible, it is necessary to demonstrate the will to intervene through continuous seizures. Furthermore, it is important to ensure that private organizations pay for the services performed by the Local Police during events, such as football matches, so as not to deprive resources of control activities on the territory.
Catello Maresca (Gruppo Maresca) believes that the approach to the problems is completely wrong, since it seems that there is no will to solve them. Citizens expect answers and, to satisfy this need, it is necessary to guarantee a minimum level of legality and demonstrate maximum availability, even personal, to solve the problems.
Iris Savastano (Forza Italia) highlighted that the main problems of the city are work and security. The criticisms regarding the insufficiency of the actions undertaken are not a personal attack on the councilor, but a request to find different solutions to respond to emergencies. It is necessary to collaborate with other law enforcement agencies, since the Local Police alone cannot resolve complex situations such as the one in Piazza Garibaldi.
Gennaro Andreozzi (Napoli Solidale Europa Verde Difendi la Città) defined the criticisms addressed to the councilor, who is doing his utmost, as ungenerous. Instead, it is necessary to take a more responsible approach, starting from the answers to be provided regarding work and the suburbs, two issues that the Government is addressing in opposite ways, through cuts to resources.
Fulvio Fucito (Manfredi Mayor) appreciated the idea of a synergy between different forces to solve the problems, while Gennaro Esposito (Manfredi Mayor) asked for intervention in situations that put public safety at risk, as in the case of the narrow streets of the Decumani, where the stalls prevent the safe circulation of pedestrians.
Alessandra Clemente (Mixed Group) encouraged the work of the local police and the councilor, suggesting that the commission could contribute to the operational plans put in place to combat illegality.
