The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella arrived in Naples for the celebrations of the eightieth anniversary of the Four Days, popular uprising with which the city freed itself from Nazi-fascist occupation.
Accompanied by Undersecretary Isabella Rauti and welcomed in Piazza della Repubblica by Prefect Claudio Palomba, Mayor Gaetano Manfredi and President of the Campania Region Vincenzo De Luca, the Head of State took part in laying a wreath at the foot of the Monument to the Scugnizzo, which commemorates the role of the very young Neapolitans in the popular revolt of 27-30 September 1943.
The head of state was welcomed at the foot of the monument dedicated to the scugnizzi protagonists of the rebellion of Naples against the German troops, by the president of the Campania Region, Vincenzo De Luca, by the mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, and by the prefect of Naples, Claudio Palomba.
Mattarella then went to Villa Rosebery, the historic presidential residence in Posillipo. In the afternoon he will attend the conference “The Four Days of Naples 80 Years Later” in the Basilica of San Giovanni Maggiore, organized by the Department of Human and Social Sciences of the University of Naples L'Orientale.
The presence of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella at the celebrations for the 80th anniversary of the Four Days of Naples "is very important for the city and is the recognition of how the insurrection was a national event that contributed in a decisive way to the liberation of the country and the birth of our Republic".
The mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, said this, speaking to journalists at the end of the ceremony in Piazza della Repubblica, with the laying of a wreath in homage to the fallen of the Four Days at the foot of the Monument to the Scugnizzo. Manfredi expressed "gratitude to President Mattarella for having strongly wanted to be in Naples to participate in this very important anniversary for the city".
