In the Neapolitan neighborhood of Vomero, preparations are in full swing these days for the feast of San Gennaro, which will take place on September 19th. “It is a very heartfelt event for the inhabitants of the hill – says Gennaro Capodanno, president of the Comitato Valori collinari, former president of the Circoscrizione Vomero .

It must be remembered, in this regard, that popular tradition, epigraphic sources and monumental testimonies place the first miracle of the liquefaction of the blood of the Patron Saint right in the territory of the Praedium Antinianum, an obligatory stop, in Roman times, along the Via Puteolana which, per colles, connected the Phlegraean city to Naples".

“The miracle – continues Capodanno – is said to have occurred during a break in the liturgical procession organized by the diocese of Naples and Campania for the transfer of the body and head of San Gennaro from the Agro Marciano, where he was buried, to the catacombs of Capodimonte, the current home of the saint's remains.

The procession is said to have witnessed the miracle when, during a stop on the Vomero hill, Eusebia, the saint's nurse, born and living in the hamlet of Antignano, approached and donated the ampoules containing the martyr's blood, collected, as was the custom at the time, near the solfatara at the time of his martyrdom. The ampoules had been kept until then by the same nurse.

“Popular tradition – underlines Capodanno – has it that the miracle was determined by the meeting between the head and the blood of the Saint. The event is commemorated both by a high relief, where Eusebia is seen kneeling, giving the ampoules to the Bishop who is leading the procession, a high relief which is found in the Pontifical Basilica in via S. Gennaro ad Antignano, one of the three churches, together with that of San Gennaro al Vomero, in via Bernini, and that of San Gennariello or of the Little Pompeii, the oldest of the three, located in via Cifariello, dedicated to the saint within the territory of the hilly district, and by the memorial stone which in 1941 was placed by the papal delegation a short distance from the Basilica itself, where the first miracle is said to have occurred”.

"The feast of San Gennaro – Capodanno points out – will take place in Vomero, on the patron saint's day, with liturgical celebrations, including a mass, which will be held at 18:00 pm in the parish of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini. Afterwards, the traditional solemn procession will take place along the ancient Via Antiniana and the historic streets of the neighborhood. Along the route, the procession will stop in front of the Pontifical Basilica of San Gennaro ad Antignano. Finally, the event will conclude in Piazza degli Artisti with the blessing of the people and the traditional fireworks."
