Seventy years of history, a new world circuit and a fascinating challenge that also involves athletes accustomed to swimming in the pool, such as the 4x100 world champion Frederick Burdisso. The Capri-Naples Farmacosmo Trophy maintains its unchanged beauty, even though it is renewed every year: it will be the same next Saturday, September 9th, when the 58th edition is scheduled.
For this important milestone, as explained in the press conference at the Circolo Canottieri Napoli, the Maratona del Golfo celebrates its inclusion in the new UltraMarathon Swim Series of the World Open Water Swimming Association (Wowsa). As always, the race will start from Marina Grande, from “Le Ondine beach club” by Gemma Rocchi, at 10 am – with the presentation of the athletes which will be entrusted to Massimiliano Rosolino, also present at the finish line) – and the finish line in the Molosiglio area, with the welcome village set up once again at the Circolo Canottieri Napoli.
The race has 23 athletes registered, seven women, from Brazil, Chile, France, Macedonia, Holland, Uruguay and Italy. Three former winners are competing: Alessio Occhipinti (2021 and 2022), Francesco Ghettini (2018) and the Macedonian Evgenij Pop Acev (2016). With them, Mario Sanzullo, from Massa di Somma in Naples, European champion in the 25 km in 2022. Then there is the debut of another Neapolitan, Giuseppe Ilario, bronze at the youth world championships in the 10 km, but there is also much anticipation for the one from Burdisso, two bronzes at the Tokyo Olympics and gold at the 2022 Budapest world championships in the 4x100 medley, who will compete in the open sea.
Among the women, the winner of the last two years, the French Caroline Jouisse, returns. Then there are four Argentines (Yensen and Imwinkelried the strongest), with Vanesa Garcia (third last year) who with her 2023 participation, equals her compatriot Pilar Geijo in terms of the record of female presences (twelve). Completing the starting list is a Chilean and the Italian Elena Lionello.
