Genoa, September 13, 2023 – A 60-year-old man, detained in Genoa's Marassi prison, was found dead in his cell, and the Genoa Prosecutor's Office confirmed the case as homicide, following reports released by unions. A magistrate and forensic investigators visited the scene. The man's attacker appears to have been his cellmate, who, like him, is Italian.
The victim's face was reportedly badly injured when he was found. Investigations are currently underway to delve deeper into the matter.
"If confirmed, this is the second murder that occurred in our prisons, after the one in June in the Velletri prison. These facilities, which constitutionally should represent places of rules and re-education, are unfortunately proving to be centers of crime. Today's death adds to the 51 suicides and 64 other deaths that occurred during 2023, bringing the total number of victims to 116", said Gennarino De Fazio, secretary of the UILPA Penitentiary Police.
De Fazio added: “This situation highlights the persistent emergency in the penitentiary system, in full view of everyone except the Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, and the Meloni government. We suffer from overcrowding in prisons, staff shortages, lack of equipment and general disorganization. All these problems are particularly evident also in the Marassi prison in Genoa”.
“We must put an end to this carnage and guarantee safety in prisons through a decree-law that, urgently and beyond the unrealizable ideas of the Minister of Justice, provides for a reduction in prison overcrowding, the immediate hiring of additional personnel in the Penitentiary Police, which currently has a shortage of 18.000 units, the strengthening of equipment and the restructuring of the entire penitentiary system, starting with the structures themselves,” concluded De Fazio.
