Amarena the bear was shot and killed last night by a man on the outskirts of San Benedetto dei Marsi, outside the park and its adjacent area. The news was posted by the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park on its Facebook page.

“At approximately 23:00 pm this evening, the Amarena Bear was hit by a gunshot fired by Mr. LA on the outskirts of San Benedetto dei Marsi, outside the Park and the Adjacent Area.” it reads.

The Park administrators then wrote: "The Park Guards promptly intervened on site, on surveillance duty, given the area where Amarena had come down with her cubs. The Park veterinarian intervened on site with the emergency team, who however could only confirm the death of the bear given the severity of the wound.

The man was identified by the Park Rangers and then subjected to investigations by the Carabinieri of the local station, who intervened following the call from the Park Rangers.

The investigations to ascertain the dynamics of the facts are underway and will continue all night, just as the Park staff is busy identifying the bear's two cubs to evaluate what to do.

The episode is a very serious fact, which causes enormous damage to the population that numbers around sixty specimens, hitting one of the most prolific females in the history of the Park.

Obviously there are no reasons whatsoever to justify the episode since Amarena, despite causing damage to agricultural and livestock activities, always and in any case compensated by the Park even outside the borders of the Contiguous Area, had never created any kind of problem for man”.
