The “Severino Gazzelloni” International Flute Competition is back, now in its eleventh edition. It will be held from 26 to 30 September 2023, under the guidance of Maestro Salvatore Lombardi, and will take place, for the first time, in the Martucci Hall of the “San Pietro a Majella” Conservatory of Naples. The Competition – open to flautists and piccolo players of all nationalities and composed of a jury of internationally renowned flautists – is organized by the AFI Falaut ets Association in collaboration with the “San Pietro a Majella” Conservatory of Naples, and enjoys the moral patronage of CIDIM-Italian National Music Committee, AIAM and MED.

The event, named after the famous musician Severino Gazzelloni – who through his numerous performances had the great merit of spreading the knowledge of the flute to a wider audience – aims to support the talent of young people by offering them new professional opportunities in the world of music. The jury composed of illustrious international flutists includes Jean-Claude Gérard (historical founder of European flute playing), Andrea Manco (first flute of the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala in Milan), Salvatore Lombardi (international soloist and president of the AFI Association), Gaetano Panariello (composer), Nicola Mazzanti (international soloist).

There are also several special prizes, including the Glauco Cambursano Prize, the Ernesto Köhler Prize and the “Suono Italiano” Prize, thanks to which the winner will be invited by Cidim to hold a concert as part of the international project “Suono Italiano”.

The competition puts young artists to the test and showcases their talent.

"We are honored and proud of the welcome that the San Pietro a Majella Conservatory of Music has given us. – declares Maestro Salvatore Lombardi – A historic cultural institution and heir to older realities, for over two centuries it has been the home of music in Naples, the highest point of reference. Bringing the new edition of the Severino Gazzelloni Prize here gives prestige to the Falaut and confirms the commitment we put into supporting young musicians. Ultimately, the Gazzelloni competition is also a project that acts as a talent scout. A tool to continue to feed that forge of great musicians that Italy and Europe have been producing for centuries. It is no coincidence that the international careers of all the world champions over the course of 11 years have started from the Gazzelloni. Participants in the international competition will become part of the History of Naples and its melody, in a place that is an educational space, a museum and a forge of talent. For this reason, our recognition goes to the president of the conservatory Luigi Carbone, to the director Carmine Santaniello and to the vice-director Gaetano Panariello".

AFI and Falaut. Founded in 1998 and refounded in 2007, the AFI Falaut ets Association, under the direction of Maestro Salvatore Lombardi, has organized numerous events over the years, such as: FlautoMania, Falaut Festival, Falaut Day, Falaut Campus, the “Severino Gazzelloni” International Flute Competition, and the Vallo di Diano Flute Festival. The Association also oversees the editorial project of the “Rivista Falaut”, a sector periodical (flute magazine with CD). Initially launched as an editorial project, Falaut soon after, thanks to the enthusiasm of its collaborators and readers, transformed into a cultural movement aimed at creating a series of events linked to the Italian musical tradition for the valorization of the flute and Italian flutists. Over the years, AFI has established important collaborations with public and private entities.
