“Yesterday morning in the Salerno prison, around 6 am, an Italian prisoner suffered a cut to his throat, but was rescued and saved by the Penitentiary Police personnel who were constantly monitoring him.
The prisoner is in fact in prison for the murder of his wife that he committed a few days ago. For this reason the Penitentiary Police kept him under close observation due to the high risk that he would commit an extreme act.”
He reports it Orlando Scocca, FP CGIL Campania for the Penitentiary Police: “However, this is only one of the many events that occur in the Salerno prison, mostly committed by inmates with psychiatric problems, both those already certified and all the others who are showing increasing signs of imbalance.
This creates constant work-related stress that prevents any police officer from lowering their guard for every minute spent on duty.

If only someone had been distracted for a few minutes or, due to a lack of personnel, had been employed in another service position at that moment, the tragedy would have occurred with the consequent investigation by the Judiciary and the Penitentiary Administration itself, which would not have hesitated for a moment, in the meantime, to put the Penitentiary Policeman on duty under investigation.”
Mirko Manna of the National FP CGIL: "It is extremely difficult, stressful and dangerous to continue in this situation. The prisons are in a constant state of emergency, the Penitentiary Police are constantly understaffed, the violence and damage due to the mental distress of the inmates are constantly increasing.
We do not have adequately trained Penitentiary Police personnel to manage prisoners with these pathologies and it is increasingly difficult to carry out their institutional duties without adequate tools to be able to effectively manage such a mass of critical events. A recruitment plan for the Penitentiary Police is urgently needed.
This current Government has also been promising it since day one, but this time too it seems that they can barely guarantee the replacement of the Police officers who will retire during the year.”
