One person died and one was injured in an accident on the docks of the port of Salerno. Two maritime workers working aboard a ship bound for Messina were involved.
According to initial reports, they were hit by a truck carrying ship containers. There was nothing that could be done for one of them, the other was taken to the hospital.
The fatal accident at work occurred on board a Caronte & Tourist ship in the port of Salerno, at pier 26, inside the ship's garage. The Port Authority reports that it was caused by a malfunction of the fifth wheel, the piece of steel that connects the trailer to the driver with the moving part, a condition that caused the trailer to come loose.
At the scene of the accident, together with officials of the Central Tyrrhenian Port System Authority, are the president, Andrea Annunziata, and the head of Security, Ugo Vestri.
The victim, according to Gerardo Arpino of the Cgil of Salerno, is an officer of Caronte & Tourist, as is his colleague who was seriously injured and hospitalized in the hospital of Salerno. "The word death cannot be associated with that of work. We must raise the levels of safety at work. In the meantime, we express our closeness to the family of the victim and the injured", says the union representative.
