A brave 91-year-old woman from San Giorgio a Cremano prevented a scam attempt and helped arrest two men.
The woman received a phone call that followed the same pattern as the elderly scams. She was told that she needed to deliver documents to her grandson, but that she would have to pay 700 euros for the home delivery service.
Despite the man's unconvincing chatter, the 91-year-old was aware of the scams that are committed against the elderly. She was well informed thanks to television and newspapers, and her relatives had instructed her on how to behave. So, she let the man on the phone finish his charade.
After that, she hung up and called the emergency number 112 to tell the Carabinieri everything. The military from the San Giorgio a Cremano station responded immediately to the report and arrived at the woman's home before the scammers.
In the presence of the carabinieri, the woman waited for them to knock on the door. After a few minutes, the doorbell rang and the “courier” asked to deliver a package. As if in a charade, the 91-year-old took the package and gave part of the money. But the carabinieri were already ready and as soon as the “courier” delivered the package, they arrested both scammers.
The accomplice, who was in the car accompanying the scammer, was also immediately identified and arrested. The two scammers are Luciano Maiorano and Alfonso Balido, both 50 years old and Ponticelli. They are now in prison awaiting trial. The 91-year-old received compliments from the Carabinieri for having foiled another attempted scam.
