The President of the Campania Region, Vincenzo De Luca, yesterday carried out an inspection visit to the demolition site of the Marconi Bridge, located in the municipal territory San Marzano on the Sarno.
During the visit, the governor, explains a note from the Municipality, "personally inquired about the progress of the works while the councilor Bonavitacola illustrated in detail the phases of the project, which go from the demolition of the bridge to the clearing of the area along the Sarno river for 12 kilometers and the safety of the place, which has long been abandoned among waste and undergrowth".
De Luca, again the note from the Authority, underlined the importance of finding a balance between environmental protection and the effectiveness of the corrective intervention. He highlighted the need to avoid environmental disasters, problems and constant flooding during the autumn and winter period, in addition to ensuring a clean sea along the entire Campania coast.
To achieve these goals, he announced an upgrade of the Angri purifier, an intervention that will lead to an increase in costs but is essential to improve water quality. The mayor of San Marzano, Carmela Zuottolo, is satisfied: "this is a great victory for the Municipality of San Marzano sul Sarno.
It was 2020 – he recalled – the first time we came here with the leaders of the Region, in two years of battles we finally reached a turning point for a bridge that many in the Region didn't even know about.
We must now continue with the demolition, the dredging, the works, the remediation, the deforestation, the embankments, but this is the first point that is put on this important page of history.
Back in October 2020, someone in the opposition said that it would be enough to make an ordinance to demolish the bridge, instead, after hearings and requests in the Region, I went ahead like a tank to remove this plug that was obstructing the passage of waste and sediment, representing a danger for my citizens, homes and crops".
“An illegal bridge – the mayor continues -, whose demolition and disposal costs would have fallen on our community. Only a battle without political colors, however, has led the Municipality to assert its rights and now all the costs are borne by the Region. I will be a sentinel on the territory during the works, continuing to bring local requests to the appropriate venues. The demolition of the Marconi Bridge represents a significant step for the restoration and safety of the territory”.
