According to Giuliano Amato, the most credible version of the Ustica massacre is that the Itavia DC9 was shot down by a French missile, with the complicity of the Americans and other people involved in the air war on the evening of June 27.

Amato claims that the target of the attack was Gaddafi, who was flying a Mig from his air force. The plan was to simulate a NATO exercise with many aircraft in action and fire a missile at the Libyan leader. The attack was later presented as an involuntary accident during the exercise.

Gaddafi was warned of the danger and decided not to board his plane. The missile launched against the Libyan Mig hit instead the Itavia DC9, causing the death of 81 people.

According to Amato, the most widely accepted hypothesis is that the missile was launched by a French fighter from an aircraft carrier off the southern coast of Corsica or from the Solenzara military base. France has never clarified this point.

Six years after the tragedy, when he was undersecretary to the Presidency of the Council, Amato asked for direct information from the Italian military command. Initially, the military refused to provide information, hindering the investigation. Later, Amato received visits from generals who tried to convince him that the plane had exploded because of a bomb.

Amato understood that there were lies surrounding the tragedy and wondered why they were being told to him. He understood that there was a hidden truth involving NATO.

Regarding France, Amato wonders why President Macron does not want to remove the shame hanging over his country. According to Amato, Macron could do so by demonstrating that his thesis is unfounded or, if its validity were confirmed, by deeply apologizing to Italy and the families of the victims on behalf of his government. Amato believes that prolonged silence is not a solution.
