The official death toll from the powerful earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter scale that struck Morocco last night has risen to 1.037.
This was announced in the latest report released by the Ministry of the Interior, according to which the injured are over 1.200. The toll is however destined to increase.
The ministry indicated that the Royal Armed Forces, local authorities, law enforcement agencies and civil protection teams of the prefectures and provinces affected by the earthquake continue to mobilize all means of intervention to provide the necessary aid and assess the damage.
The tremor was recorded by seismographs at 23pm yesterday and the epicentre was located in the centre of the country, 11 kilometres from the village of Tata N'Yaaqoub, in the municipality of Ighil, 16 kilometres south-west of Marrakech.
The wave-like movement lasted about 30 seconds. According to initial reports from the Moroccan Interior Ministry, the greatest damage was recorded in the provinces of Al Halous, Marrakech, Ouarzazate, Azial, Chichaoua and Taroudant.
The shock was felt from north to south, both in the interior of the country and on the coast. According to Moroccan media, it is the most powerful earthquake ever to hit the Kingdom.
Farnesina: 400 Italians in Morocco, they are all well
There are currently 400 Italians in Morocco, hit last night by a strong earthquake, and "they are all fine". This was announced by the head of the Farnesina Crisis Unit Nicola Minasi speaking to Rainews24.
In addition to the first 200 Italians who had already been reported and contacted – the diplomat explained – there are another 200 who were participating in a company convention. “We are in contact with everyone,” Minasi assured.
