The death toll from the devastating 2.497 magnitude earthquake that struck central Morocco on September 6.8 has risen to 8, while at least 2.476 people have been injured.
The Moroccan Interior Ministry reported this in a statement, according to which the most affected areas include the provinces of Al Haouz with 1.452 victims, Taroudant with 764 and Chichaoua with 202. They are followed by the provinces of Ouarzazate with 38 deaths, Marrakech (18), Azilal (11) and the prefecture of Agadir (5). In the Greater Casablanca region, 3 victims have been recorded. Deaths have also been reported in the provinces of Youssofia and Tinghir.
The radios continue to broadcast verses from the Koran, music banned during the days of mourning, on all radio and television stations. The bodies are buried and attempts are made to help the survivors. Marrakech is mobilizing in these hours, as the shock of the Earthquake gives way to the reaction to return to life.
Over a thousand doctors and almost two thousand nurses have rushed to the disaster areas and in particular to the province of Al Haouz. The Moroccans' call for solidarity is realized for example in the 6 thousand blood bags donated per day in the collection centers.
Marrakech, along with the courageous tourists who remained in the city, also to lend a hand despite their fear, is clearing debris from the streets, barring entrances to unsafe structures, and assessing the damage. All Moroccan armed forces have converged on the epicenter of the earthquake, which measured 7 on the Richter scale and shook the country.
There are villages still to be reached in the Atlas Mountains. Displaced people are camping outside the walls, in the open spaces near the medina. Solidarity is in motion: in numerous centers in the new city, collections are being organized for blankets and clothing to be sent to the Atlas villages. Local foundations and NGOs are already involved, raising funds, such as EFA (Education for All), the British Moroccan Society, or more directly, Amalnonprofit, which prepares 1000 meals a day for the displaced in collaboration with World Central Kitchen.
