September is still confirmed as a month of vacations. There are 11,5 million Italians who choose the last part of the summer to travel, once or more, for a total of 12,5 million departures, spending almost 5,2 billion euros.
These are the data from the Confcommercio Tourism Observatory – Swg. Family, work and study ties do not favor long stays at the destination. In fact, less than 18% will be trips of 7 days or more, over 60% of departures will be for one or two nights maximum.
Traveling in September is still a strongly desired choice, not a stopgap: among the basic motivations, in fact, 1 in 3 Italians define it as "the best month" to visit the chosen destination and 1 in 4 declares to prefer it because it is the month in which the territory comes alive with shows, cultural events and initiatives.
Particularly attentive to planning the holiday in every detail, the September traveller has already decided at the beginning of the month where and with whom to go – 6 cases out of 10 – and also established where to stay – 1 out of 2 – while proving to be more flexible on the budget to be made available, probably willing to indulge in some small extra expenses.
The desire for sun before the arrival of the coldest season places the seaside at the top of travel destinations for 4 out of 10 Italians, but cities of art and the mountains hold up well, totaling a further 30% of preferences.
This is also confirmed by the ranking of the regions selected as top destinations: Liguria, Tuscany, Campania, Trentino Alto Adige and Lazio. The horizon of reference is almost exclusively national: 13% of those interviewed will travel abroad, almost exclusively in Europe. Consequently, the main means of transport for those leaving in September is the private car, used by 6 out of 10 Italians.
Contrary to what was found in August, the hotel returns to first place as an overnight stay solution: 31% of traveling Italians choose it while second homes owned or rented and the hospitality of friends and relatives total 22% overall. . B&Bs and short-term rentals, probably driven by the attractiveness of cities of art and villages, attract one in 3 Italians.
