The volcanologist Giuseppe De Natale, former director of the Vesuvian Observatory, has sent a certified email to the prefect of Naples in which he asks to evacuate the buildings in the Agnano-Solfatara area, where the phenomenon of Phlegraean bradyseism It is more intense, to allow the vulnerability of buildings to shocks to be verified.

This is what the Corriere del Mezzogiorno writes, according to which the certified email was sent to the prefect on 18 September, "in the face - as stated in the letter - of an imminent risk and of an evident, very strong concern on the part of the citizens".

The Prefecture of Naples, Corriere continues, forwarded the report "to the competent authorities," namely the National Civil Protection Agency, the INGV (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology), and the Campania Region.

The volcanologist is concerned about the effects of the continuous and repeated tremors on the stability of buildings in an area of approximately 20 square kilometers.

De Natale refers to the results of some of his studies, "according to which the tremors in the Campi Flegrei are expected to increase both in number and intensity." According to the scholar, "seismic risk mitigation action is needed, with a comprehensive assessment of the vulnerability of buildings in a 20-kilometer area, starting with strategic buildings (schools, hospitals, public offices)."

De Natale, the newspaper writes, "clarifies that he does not wish to override the competences of his own institute, the INGV, but explains to the prefect that he decided to send the letter 'having received no response for five years' and 'since the seismic situation is now extremely critical'," because with stronger earthquakes, the researcher states, "there is a serious risk of the subsidence or collapse of the most vulnerable buildings located near the epicenters; exactly the scenario I had anticipated in the 2018 certified email."
