Problems at the Nilo section of the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison where an inmate, apparently with psychiatric problems, has caused a lot of damage to the penitentiary structure. In detail he caused flooding, breaking monitors, printers and bathrooms.
The prison police intervened in an attempt to restore calm, but one of them was injured with severe trauma to the leg.
The news was reported by the AS.P.PE. confederate union CON.SI.PE. The vice president Luciano Martiniello explains: "We have been denouncing for some time the state of abandonment in which prison police officers find themselves and the failure of a State that continues to accept prisoners with psychiatric problems in the prisons of the Italian Peninsula.
These individuals cannot and must not be detained in prison, there are no means, there are no qualified people and above all there are no psychiatric doctors 24 hours a day. Now that's enough, we're tired of always being cannon fodder".
For the regional secretary Campania AS.P.PE-CON.SI.PE, Louis Castaldo: “The number of non-EU citizens in prison is increasing and the costs for the State are increasing. Finding solutions that benefit the State coffers is a conscientious and wise action.
The Penitentiary Police Corps cannot be the sacrificial lamb of a penitentiary system that shows so many critical issues".
For the unionist Castaldo of ASP.P.PE-CON.Si.PE: “We hope for courageous choices on the part of the Government so that Italian prisons become places of treatment and re-education and not containers of human beings to idle away at the expense of society”.
